Understanding Culture and Using it as Your Biggest Strategic Advantage.

Leaders, you’ve probably heard Peter Drucker’s famous line: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Here’s the truth I’ve seen in practice – culture and strategy need to eat breakfast together. The most successful organizations make sure both culture and business strategy are aligned and reinforcing the same purpose.

So, what exactly do we mean by culture? At its core, it’s the way work happens between people. It’s shaped by:

  • The principles that guide decisions (our values and beliefs)
  • The unwritten rules of how work gets done (our norms and behaviors)
  • The stories, traditions, and practices that reinforce belonging in our company (our stories and work practices); and finally
  • The policies and processes that either support or breakdown culture (our systems & structures).

Leaders, YOU play the most critical role in bringing your company culture to life:

  • Living the values every day…. because if you cut corners, your team will too.
  • Shaping behaviors as you grow…because culture often cracks during rapid growth unless it’s intentionally reinforced; and
  • Building trust and connection – through transparency, inclusion, and shared practices that bring people together.

When leaders take culture seriously, they create the conditions for people to do their best work – this enables the business to thrive.

And here’s the important part: culture doesn’t take care of itself. It takes ongoing attention, reinforcement, and alignment with business strategy and the overarching purpose of the organization. That’s why many companies partner with experts who can accelerate the culture journey – bringing the tools, frameworks, and practical know-how to make it stick.

So, Leaders, as we head into our new week, I’ll leave you with this important thought:
